House Envy: A Deadly Sin?

Here’s a look at some houses and house designs that I would kill to have. See? I told you envy was deadly.

This over the top tree house looks like way more fun than the makeshift one we scraped together as children. Of course, I’ve always been told it’s the thought that counts.

I wonder what the inside looks like….

Should we take the speed boat or the cruiser into town today, dear?

The grass is always greener, the grass is always greener, the grass is always greener…

Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover

The old saying is true, and sometimes impossible to abide by. When browsing for a new book to read, a cover can be as convincing as the material inside. Great covers can catch your eye, and bad covers can turn you off to a book in an instant.

Here are some covers that I think are brilliant, eye catching, and force you to break the rule.

We Are the Friction by various artists and authors, cover art by Lizzy Stewart and Jez Burrows

Pygmy by Chuck Palahniuk, cover art by Michael Collica

One Red Paperclip by Kyle MacDonald, cover art by Kyle Kolker

Leather Maiden by Joe R. Lansdale, cover art by Peter Mendelsund

An Ethics of Interrogation by Michael Skerker, cover art by Isaac Tobin

Spring, Sprung

A nod to the hallowed symbol of that most treasured of American institutions; a symbol without which the spiritual, physical, and fallen world would have no meaning or salvation:

The Easter basket.

Happy Easter, frolickers.

Welcome!

(tap tap) Testing, testing, one two three…

Hiya folks. Welcome to Basis Design, the blog. You may have a few questions:

1) What the heck is this?

Good question. It’s a blog, which we’ll try to update at least a few times a week, that’s all about shedding light on great “space” design. The kind of things you build rooms around, desks around, even parts of your life around. You know, couches, chairs, shoes, organizational products, all the little bits of life and art that combine to improve and define the spaces in which you live; stuff. The more we thought about it, the more we realized all this stuff is really more than that; it’s isn’t just surface and color, or “expression.” All this stuff, all these little touches, add up to the building blocks of your home. The objects from which you derive comfort, or flexibility, or efficiency, or even peace. Also, we wanted to have a place to post pictures of a bunch of awesome design pieces that just set our little hearts aflutter.

So we’ll be posting regularly with the aim and intention of sharing cool stuff with people who maybe could use it. We all build the spaces we live in with seemingly meaningless “stuff”; it’s going to be our job to shine on the best of the best (or, you know, something we just think is the hotness).

2) Who are “we?”

“We,” as in, you know, the editorial, the royal, are Wes and Heather (and some other occasional contributors). I wouldn’t say we share a sensibility, but we dig on furniture/home/life design, and we  like to write, and I guess now we like to make our opinions about sweet knickknacks known to the widest possible audience. Are we megalomaniacs? Keep reading, traveler. Keep reading.

Anyway, thanks a ton for stopping by. We hope to be helpful, and cool, and maybe even a smidge inspiring. We care that much about design (stop looking at us that way). Keep visiting, and be sure to let us know how we can be better.

Until next time, (Vulcan hand signal)
