Sweet Ride

The Oregon Manifest held a contest in September of 2011 to find the “Ultimate Utility Bike for Modern Living”. They sought to find a bike that would meet the needs of Americans who want to live a healthier and more sustainable life.

The judges panel was made up of leaders in the bicycle industry including the President of the United Bicycle Institute and the VP of Innovation Design and Special Products at Nike. Tony Pereira of Pereira Cycles came up with a truly innovative, exciting, and winning design, and got  a $3,000.00 prize for his effort!

Although this bike is impressive, I think the true winner has to be the ‘People’s Choice’ winners, IDEO and Rock Lobster Cycles. In a contest where you’re designing a product to be used by people, this award is a big deal. I have to agree with the voters, this bike is pretty cool.

Let me introduce you to Faraday…

Vibram Five Finger Shoe

Introduce yourselves, friends, to the Vibram Five Finger Shoe.

Pretty awesome, right?

It’s been quite some time since I’ve seen such a startling and attractive shoe design. Specifically, this is a running and outdoor shoe – with each toe getting its own little pocket the wearer is going to get more balance, more grip, and more traction. And it’ll feel like you’re barefoot the whole time!

I know I’m gushing, but this is really quite a brilliant shoe. I tried a pair on up at Mountain Outfitters in Monteagle, TN, and I loved the way they felt as much as I love the way they look. Check out the Vibram Five Finger Shoe here.

Bill Simmons is the James Cameron of sports columnists. He makes more money than anyone else, everyone on the internet reads his work, and he’s the de facto favorite sportswriter of the general population. He has a feel for the pulse of the nation, if you will, and a middle brow sensibility that brings in readers of all stripes. His recent (and second) #1 New York Times Bestseller is titled The Book of Basketball. It’s Simmons’ exhaustive take on the history of the league, the best players and coaches and teams. It is a very entertaining 700 page list in the guise of a book. And now, thanks to enthusiastic fans, it even has a poster. Check it out:

Pretty slick. Simmons fans will notice many of the inside jokes, and everyone can appreciate the mustache on Larry Legend.

The ESPN Herbie Awards: Stoopid?

One weird thing ESPN does is allow Kirk Herbstreit to take many hundreds of thousands of their dollars for talking on television about college football. Another weird thing they do is allow him to give out the “Herbie Awards” every year. Even weirder, they allow Herbstreit to give an award in the category of “Looks Good in Uniform.” Huh? One player out of more than 10,000 in the FBS gets picked. I know; dumb. Here are this years nominees, doin’ work:

Safety DeAndre McDaniel, Clemson

DeAndrea does look great, hard to deny it.

Tight End Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame Our Mother

Rudolph is captured here at the exact moment he realizes he’s being coached by Charlie Weis.

Defensive Back Patrick Peterson, LSU (A.J. Green is pictured eating his lunch)

This is a picture of Patrick getting owned for the first of two times by A.J. Green in last year’s UGA-LSU tilt. Wow, he really does look great in that uni.

What do you guys think? Legit award, or more bizarre thought-poop from Herbie?

Great College Football Stadiums

Do you fill that chill in the air? Neither do I, it’s like 100 degrees outside, but still; college football is just around the corner. Rather than wax poetic about the University of Georgia Bulldogs, their excellent color scheme, the unique silver britches, the Arch, the Chapel Bell, Uga, and whatnot, why don’t I do the charitable thing and acknowledge some really, really cool stadiums:

Sanford Stadium, University of Georgia

Oh what, I have to hide the belle of the ball? Sanford Stadium, with a capacity of over 92,000 people, is one of the most beautiful venues in the country. One end of the stadium opens onto a bridge from which tall people and children on the shoulders of their parents can watch the game for nothing, and the view the gap affords of campus is truly lovely. In my opinion, we oughta extend the third deck all the way around to the press box, and bump the number north of 100k.

The Big House, University of Michigan

The Big One. The Big House is the largest stadium in the country, capacity wise, and is only 99 seats short of 110k. It’s built into the ground, so that from the outside it doesn’t appear imposing; but inside, the sea of blue is said to be an awesome sight. One caveat; the rumor about TBH is that it’s very quiet. So quiet that fans actually jangle keys rather than yell during the games. This is sacrilege, and if Basis had ever been there and witnessed such an event, it would be left off the list.

The Shoe, Ohio State University

Partisans would prefer us to refer to OSU as THE Ohio State University, but we won’t, because please. Massive in size and attractive in layout, the horseshoe design for this stadium has become a template for stadiums across the country.

Neyland Stadium, University of Tennessee

Walking around outside Neyland (Either NAY-lend or KNEE-lend depending on who you ask) Stadium you could be forgiven for thinking it’s one of those tall, large, old-time roller coasters, or possibly the beginnings of a skyscraper. Built straight up, with an upper deck prone to give it’s denizens nausea, it’s big, loud, orange, and intimidating. The colors are hideous, but they’re all Tennessee.

Autzen Stadium, University of Oregon

As much an engineering feat as anything else, Autzen is the loudest stadium in the country. It owes it all to design; Nike founder Phil Knight is a graduate and paid for pretty much the entire athletic department. Very cool design, very cool result.

Sept. 4th can’t get here fast enough.

NCAA 11 Covers

This is the Official EA Sports NCAA Football 11 Cover for the PS3:

It is an abomination, an offense before God and man alike, a stain upon the surface of the earth, and an obscenity. Forthwith, I give you an alternate, and altogether awesome, cover, which I shall soon be purchasing from it’s creators:

Championship Trophies

In all the excitement of this enthralling and (for us Americans) inspiring World Cup, one thing that finds little mention is the astounding ugliness of the World Cup itself.

Just no good at all. But what about some of the other major sports? Here we have the Larry O’Brien Trophy, awarded each year to the NBA champion. It’s okay; a little slick perhaps.

Kobe, of course, is holding the Finals MVP Trophy. Let’s look next to the Lombardi Trophy, the NFL Super Bowl winner’s prize. It’s certainly a major improvement over the World Cup and LOBT, but there’s still a bit to be desired.

Now here’s one I like, and it gets big points for originality; the Commissioners Trophy, given to the winner of the World Series (MLB).

Ivan appears happy.

Okay, the best of the best, my favorite, and the best looking to boot; The NHL Stanley Cup. There’s just nothing better; the size of it, the way the players get to keep it over the offseason, the fact that there’s only one, it’s age and wear – it’s a classic.

“Azalea,” No. 13 at Augusta National

As Spring continues to spring, we here at Basis have felt the old familiar itch; the itch to go out on some beautiful golf course and ruin our whole day by playing as badly as it is possible to play this ancient and noble game of golf. Design-wise, the golf course is a tricky and expensive endeavor, but when done right, it’s magical. Augusta National, the site of the Masters tournament and possibly the greatest course on earth, has as it’s crown jewel No. 13, “Azalea,” the most beautiful hole of golf in North America.
