The Factory – Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol is best known today for his inimitably imitable pop art, his many films, and his prescient prediction that “In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”

In his heyday of the 1960s, he was equally as famous (or notorious) for his living space/studio/infinite part space, called “The Factory,” or “The Silver Factory.”

It was here he made his films and his silkscreen images, here he hosted the brightest lights of the New York art, music and film world, and where the biggest stars in Hollywood mingled with the infamous “Warhol Superstars.”

The Factory was well known for its unique decor – it was painted and wrapped entirely in silver. Tin foil, tinsel, silver paint – every square inch was covered with the stuff. The statement was big, the feeling of alien presence overwhelming. The Factory was a non-stop freak out, a long burst of sex, drugs, rock and roll, art, and pop culture. The Factory was moved a few times over Warhol’s career before finally fading from history. But the photos remain:
